A Failed Heat Pump. A Good Furnace Worth Keeping.

A Tacoma homeowner contacted Heatwave for a second opinion after being told their entire heating and cooling system needed replacement, including a gas furnace reportedly affected by a cracked heat exchanger.

Our inspection found the existing gas furnace in excellent condition. It had seen relatively little use because it served mainly as backup heat for the heat pump. We did, however, confirm that the heat pump compressor was locked up and that the outdoor unit and indoor coil needed replacement.

Step 1 • Replace the failed equipment

New American Standard Outdoor Heat Pump

We confirmed the existing heat pump's compressor was locked up. Instead of automatically replacing every component of the heating system, we focused on the equipment that actually required replacement.

The outdoor heat pump was replaced as part of a targeted system update.

Step 2 • Keep what still works

New Indoor Coil, Existing Lennox Furnace Preserved

The indoor coil was replaced to match the new heat pump while the homeowner's existing Lennox gas furnace remained in place.

Our inspection found the furnace was in excellent shape. Keeping it avoided the cost of replacing equipment that did not need replacement.

Why this matters: A second opinion can help homeowners distinguish between a failed component and a complete system that truly needs replacement. We recommend work based on our findings, not on a blanket assumption that every piece of equipment has failed.
